How a cat show works

Entire adults, kittens and neutered cats never compete against each other in classes and each have their own section. Breeds fall into the category of Persian, British Short Hair, Burmese, Siamese, Oriental, Foreign and Semi-Longhair. Each category consists of a series of Open classes for cats of the same breed and this is split into male and female classes. The Open class is then further divided into classes depending on colour and pattern. Mitted and colourpoint Ragdolls of any colour will compete separately to bicolour Ragdolls. Those who win first place may be awarded Challenge Certificate (CC) or a Premier Certificate (PC) for neutered entries. Kittens do not qualify for these certificates.

Once the Open class has been assessed, the male and female winners of each class compete for the Best of Breed rosette.

After winning 3 CCs/PCs from three different judges the cat becomes a Champion/Premier and can then proceed to the next level of Grand Champion/Premier. StatCounter - Free Web Tracker and CounterTo achieve this title the cat must be awarded 3 Grand Champion/Premier certificates from a different judge each time against cats of other breeds within their section. The judge can award a Grand certificate and a Reserve Grand certificate for the runner up.

The highest level to date is the Imperial Grand Champion/Premier status and this entails the cat winning 5 Imperial Grand Champion/Premier certificate from 5 different judges. As in the Grand level, the judge can also award a Reserve Imperial certificate.

Only the cats that have won the Best of Breed, Grand or Imperial class can qualify to be nominated for Best in Section or Best of Variety. The Overall Best in Show winner is then chosen from the exhibits who were placed in Best in Section or Best of Variety.

Each exhibit also enters into Miscellaneous classes which are separate from the Open class. This is where they compete with cats of different breeds within their section.
